Investing in Education for Earth Day 2023

April 17, 2023

Earth Day 2023 takes place this coming Saturday, April 22 – and as we like to do at Itron – we’re celebrating all week long! This year’s theme is “Invest in Our Planet,” a continuation of the 2022 theme. Designed by EarthDay.org, the theme is meant to encourage businesses, governments and citizens around the world to invest in our planet, improve our environment and ensure future generations with a safer and more sustainable future.

At Itron, we believe managing our world’s energy and water resources wisely begins with education. And as part of our corporate social responsibility-led strategy, we’ve joined forces with Discovery Education, the global leader in standards-based digital content for K-12, to create the Conservation Station, an educational program that promotes energy-water literacy and conservation efforts through the innovative use of technology. In celebration of Earth Day 2023, we're excited to share new classroom activities added to the Conservation Station platform for students and educators around the world that focus on communication skills, critical and creative thinking and collaboration in a sustainability focused context.

The new resources and activities enable students to learn about the global concerns we face with energy and water, and to explore related challenges such as climate change, poverty, inequality and more through a creative lens. A robust library of digital resources that focus on sustainability and conservation-related topics is available for educators to browse and use wherever learning is taking place.

In addition to our work with Discovery Education, we are proud to support the Power Over Energy (POE) campaign, an educational initiative inspiring consumers through digital campaigns and website content. In celebration of Earth Day, POE recently launched a new Power Play Quiz. The online quiz gives consumers an opportunity to test their knowledge on practices that can improve sustainability and reduce a household’s carbon footprint.

Earth Day 2023 is a reminder that our planet has limited resources and requires communities to come together in support of long-term solutions. To create a better tomorrow, we need a new generation of innovators to help solve these challenges. Itron and our employees are committed to our corporate purpose of resourcefulness and engaging with communities to improve energy-water literacy, encourage conservation and inspire future innovators to help shape a more resourceful world.
