Itron Women Creating a More Resourceful World: Spotlight on Shakeela Pouncy

This month, we are spotlighting women at Itron in celebration of International Women's Day and Women’s History Month. These strong, talented women are working every day to drive customer success and advance Itron’s vision of creating a more resourceful world. This week, we connected with Shakeela Pouncy, project manager for managed services technical operations, located in Texas. What is your role at Itron and what was your pathway to that position?

As a project manager, I perform tasks to assist Global Managed Services (GMS) managers with their purchases, as well as track their spending and budget. I work on projects that speak to the profitability of services Itron offers and assist our AP (Accounts Payable) department with making sure suppliers are paid. I started at Itron as an intern, and really enjoyed the environment and company. This made me pursue a full-time position after my internship.

What made you pursue a career in the tech/energy/utility field and what is the path you followed?

I enjoy learning about new technologies and find it very interesting to learn how Itron utilizes technology to make a difference in the community. I began by getting my bachelor’s degree in Technical Management, and then completed my academic career by pursuing a master’s degree in IT. I did my internship at Itron while completing my master’s degree, and lastly obtained my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

What has been your experience as a woman in a male-dominated field?

While it is true IT historically has been a male-dominated world, this is all the more reason women should continue to pursue this career path. In the beginning, I was hesitant when entering IT for fear of not being given a fair chance to do the job, but this has not been the case. I personally have had a wonderful experience thus far and Itron has exceeded my expectations in terms of Diversity and Inclusion.

How have things changed – or not – since you began your career?

Since I have started my career things definitely have changed. I have gained more confidence in my ability to be successful in a tech-based job. This field can be intimidating in the beginning, but being at Itron, I have worked with managers and co-workers that are supportive as I continue to grow and learn.

What should we do to help more women get a seat at the management table?

I think we should continue to be supportive to any women that are just starting or growing their career in this field. I think we should provide women with resources that will develop their management skills and be proactive in reaching out to these women. Additionally, we should act as mentors to women striving for a seat at the management table and guide them on their journey.

What advice would you offer aspiring women interested in tech?

I would advise young women interested in tech to not get discouraged if the opportunity they are looking for does not immediately present itself. I would suggest developing your skills and experience using avenues other than employment, such as Internships, certifications, and self-study. Lastly, I would advise women to speak up and be your best advocate. Let co-workers, managers and friends know your aspirations; networking is essential to success.
