Itron Idea Labs to Demonstrate Mixed Reality for Industrial IoT at CES
Utilizing the Microsoft Azure Digital Twins Service, Itron Idea Labs will Simulate Neighborhood Improvements in a Digital Environment
LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — Jan. 2, 2019 — Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI), which is innovating the way utilities and cities manage energy and water, will demonstrate mixed reality for the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). From streetlight infrastructure to altering traffic patterns, the Itron Idea Labs demonstration enables users to visualize real-world use cases using cutting edge technologies and experience the impact of data driven plans before they are implemented.Using a public preview of Microsoft® Azure Digital Twin Platform, the Itron Idea Labs team has created a virtual representation of the relationships between building materials, infrastructure and various sensor types in a downtown Los Angeles neighborhood. Using the Microsoft HoloLens, a user is able to virtually install sensors, change rooftop materials, alter traffic patterns, plant trees and experience the impact on every person, car, school and building in the simulated environment. Itron Idea Labs is among the first adopters of Microsoft’s Digital Twins service, which enables developers to build repeatable, scalable experiences from digital sources and the physical world. Itron Idea Labs will utilize this platform and Microsoft HoloLens to demonstrate the impact of virtual pilots at CES.
“At Itron Idea Labs, we are exploring groundbreaking concepts by using emerging technologies, such as augmented reality, to realize new and bold solutions,” said Roberto Aiello, director, Itron Idea Labs. “We are excited to combine our vision with Microsoft’s technology for incredible simulations at CES.”
Bert Van Hoof, group program manager, Azure Digital Twins at Microsoft Corp. said, “Azure Digital Twins simplifies IoT solutions by providing a comprehensive digital model to connect devices with context about the physical world. At CES, Itron Idea Labs is demonstrating what’s possible with this technology. Neighborhood improvements will manifest in the simulated environment, allowing users to make informed choices regarding technologies they may be considering implementing.”
