Distributed Intelligence (DI) represents a new generation of the smart/active grid that has the ability to solve value-based use cases at the grid edge through a secure, open enterprise application platform with edge computing capability. Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) is currently exploring the capabilities of DI to gain a better understanding of the technology, maximize the value of its AMI investments and plan for prudent future investments in light of an evolving technological landscape, expanding customer needs, and the drive toward advanced grid management.

In order to accurately conduct a proof of concept for DI utilizing edge-computing technology, ComEd tested key use cases in a lab setting prior to moving to production using test sequences in which variables such as voltage and current can be manipulated to simulate a variety of electrical conditions that occur in the field. These use cases that contribute to next-generation AMI include anomaly detection, high impedance, and location awareness. After the initial testing, ComEd will pursue testing DER-related applications such as EV awareness and solar awareness to allow them to detect and plan for additional load factors at the edge.
