2022: Our Year in Review

December 22, 2022

2022 was a memorable ride. We worked with our customers and partners to lower carbon emissions, respond to natural disasters and severe weather patterns, increase operational efficiencies, leverage real-time insights, prioritize public safety and more. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the highlights.

Making Improvements from the Inside Out

In June, we released our 2021 Environmental Social Governance (ESG) Report, highlighting how Itron’s commitment to ESG and sustainability shapes all aspects of our business, from investments and acquisitions to day-to-day operations and community involvement. The report expands on our 2020 approach to our environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework that integrates with our strategic, operational and risk-management efforts – and has set several greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets to ensure we meet our goals. Centered around four key pillars, this framework represents our long-term view of sustainability, diversity and accountability as we strive to create a more resourceful world.

Enabling Customer Success

The past year was full of exciting milestones with our customers. One took place in June, when Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP) received Itron’s 4 millionth Distributed Intelligence (DI)-enabled smart electric meter. This marked a significant moment for both TNMP and Itron, as it enabled unprecedented insight into grid operations, improved customer engagement and increased grid safety. With Itron’s solution, TNMP is well-positioned for both the challenges and opportunities at the grid edge.

In January, we kicked off the year by collaborating with Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO) for a 15-year contract to deploy Itron’s industrial IoT (IIoT) solution. The solution helps SESCO improve operational efficiency and consumer engagement and includes Itron’s communications network for 180,000 Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) endpoints. Itron is thrilled to continue the expansion of this project with our long-term customer in the years to come.

Pushing the Boundaries of What’s Possible for Utilities

We strive to push the boundaries of what’s possible for our customers. This year, we did just that by launching Itron's Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Optimizer Solution, which enables EV charging assets to work in harmony with the grid. The first-of-its-kind solution is available globally and provides comprehensive EV charging and energy management for utilities. We’ve found the solution can save end customers more than 35% on their energy costs and utilities more than 20% annually.

We also released the Itron Intelix gFlex prepayment gas meter this year. The next generation meter combines Itron’s innovative ultrasonic solid state measurement technology with 30 years of experience in prepayment metering solutions. With embedded intelligence, the meter is truly plug-and-play and is built to withstand harsh installation conditions, giving utilities an easy and reliable path to revenue assurance.

We know that water is the most precious resource of all. That’s why we were thrilled to share the release of Beneath the Surface – the International Water Association’s online video series that explores the challenges, opportunities and unknowns facing the water industry. Produced by BBC Storyworks, the film profiles innovations and innovators who are advancing positive change and striving for a world where water is wisely and sustainably managed. Itron and our customer, Provo Water, are featured in the series in a film produced for us, telling the story of how the utility used Itron’s water Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution to more quickly recover water service after Hurricane Irma struck the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Getting Inspired at Itron Inspire(s)

We had the opportunity to connect with customers, partners and industry leaders at Itron Inspire in regions across the globe. Our second virtual Itron Inspire for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) as well as the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region were both a success. Each regionally focused event gathered world-renowned energy leaders to explore the possibilities of a more connected, resourceful future. This year’s virtual events included engaging sessions hosted by our leaders and customers about our industry’s top-of-mind priorities such as integrating renewables, upgrading an aging grid infrastructure, meeting the needs of increased demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and more.

Itron Inspire 2022, held in Marco Island, FL, gathered customers, partners and other thought leaders for insightful discussions and engaging presentations. The conference included a variety of forward-looking keynotes, thought leadership panels, networking events as well as a showcase of Itron’s comprehensive solutions and partner offerings. Attendees were also able to tour the Itron Experience and see how our solutions come together to deliver value-based outcomes for utilities and smart cities. At the tail end of the conference, we experienced extreme weather firsthand when Hurricane Ian changed trajectory and passed near Marco Island, FL. Fortunately, everyone stayed safe.

Celebrating our Customers and Partners

We are proud to celebrate our customers who are setting an excellent example for cities and utilities across the globe by driving transformation in our industry and taking leaps toward creating a more resourceful world. At this year’s Itron Inspire, Frost and Sullivan announced Tampa Electric Company (TECO) and Warren County Water District (WBS) as the recipients of the Excellence in Resourcefulness Awards for their steadfast efforts to minimize electric, gas and water waste. The City of London (City Corporation) was awarded the 2022 Itron Innovator Award for its collaboration with Itron partner Urban Control help determine the best way to manage and prepare for severe weather events before they become catastrophic. These are just a few examples of the extraordinary work our customers and partners are doing to address the needs of their communities, conserve the world’s most precious resources and restore the vitality of our planet.
