Executive Management

Philip Mezey

President and Chief Executive Officer
Philip Mezey was appointed president and chief executive officer and named to Itron's board of directors on January 1, 2013. Mezey has served the company in several capacities during his career at Itron, most recently as chief operating officer for Itron's global Energy segment, with responsibility for the operations of Itron's electricity and gas businesses around the world. He also previously served as senior vice president and chief operating officer — Itron North America, group vice president and general manager, as well as senior vice president for Software Solutions. Upon Itron's acquisition of Silicon Energy in 2003, Mezey joined the company as managing director of Software Development for Itron's Energy Management Solutions group.

Prior to joining Silicon Energy in 2000 as vice president, Software Development, Mezey was a founding member and served 12 years with Indus, a provider of integrated asset and customer management software. Mezey earned his BA degree in history from the University of California, Berkeley.

Mark Schmitz

Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Mark Schmitz was named executive vice president and chief financial officer in September 2014. Mark has 40 years of experience in finance and executive leadership roles across the manufacturing, service, retail and technology industries. Prior to joining Itron, Schmitz was CFO of Alghanim Industries, a privately held, global multi-industry corporation headquartered in Kuwait. He previously served as CFO at several other global corporations, including The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Tyco International Limited’s Worldwide Fire and Security Segment and Plug Power Inc. In addition, he held a number of financial leadership roles at General Motors over 25 years.

Schmitz received a MBA in Finance and a B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature from Ohio State University.

Tom Deitrich

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
Tom Deitrich has held the position of executive vice president and chief operating officer since October 2015. Deitrich has more than 20 years of experience in global operations at leading technology firms and has held a number of executive management positons where he led business-level strategies that transformed and significantly improved business results. He has extensive experience in product management, research and development, supply chain management and business development in several industries, including industrial equipment, telecommunications and semiconductors.

Before joining Itron, Deitrich was senior vice president and general manager for Digital Networking at Freescale Semiconductor. Prior to Freescale, Deitrich worked for Flextronics International, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications and General Electric Corporation.

Shannon Votava

Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary
Shannon Votava was appointed vice president, General Counsel, effective January 1, 2012. She was promoted to senior vice president, General Counsel, effective March 2016. Votava joined Itron in May 2010 as an accomplished commercial and patent attorney with extensive transactional experience for large multinational corporations. Throughout her career, Votava has successfully navigated sophisticated commercial agreements, intellectual property issues, mergers and acquisitions, governance, employment law and more. Prior to joining Itron, Votava was General Counsel for Honeywell International's Electronic Materials Business and Associate General Counsel for Cooper Industries. Votava earned her bachelor's degree from Washington State University, her Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University, a Master of Laws in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University, and an MBA from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business.

Michel Charles Cadieux

Senior Vice President, Human Resources
Michel Cadieux has worked in human resources his entire career — more than 30 years — for global technology and manufacturing companies, including Betz Laboratories, the Hudson Bay Company, ING Bank of Canada, Advanced Micro Devices/ATI and Freescale. Before coming to lead Itron's worldwide HR department in 2014, he was senior vice president at Freescale Semiconductor in Austin, TX.

Throughout his career, Cadieux has demonstrated exceptional ability as an agent of change and a strategic business partner, helping companies to scale, grow and globalize.

At Freescale Semiconductor, Cadieux joined the company at a time when it was faced with serious financial pressure and he led the restructuring and reinvigorating of the workforce, which was a contributing factor in 2008 to a return to public markets and growth.

Cadieux holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and personnel, and a certificate in business administration from the University of Ottawa. He also completed the managing human resources program from Queen's University's Executive Development in Ontario, Canada.

Chuck McAtee

Vice President, Information Technology and Chief Information Officer
Chuck McAtee was named vice president of Information Technology in May 2005 and named chief information officer in January 2006. He joined Itron in July 2004 as IT director of the electricity metering business. Before joining Itron, McAtee was director of IT for Schlumberger Electricity Metering in charge of operations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, France and Taiwan. He spent 18 years with Schlumberger, serving in numerous roles including IT operations manager for its resource management services, which included water, electricity and gas businesses. During his tenure, he helped lead the standardization and implementation of common enterprise resource planning systems across the company. In addition to his management experience, he has served in various technical roles related to applications development, system architecture, database administration and system integration. McAtee earned his bachelor's in computer science with a concentration in business administration from Clemson University.

Sharelynn Moore

Vice President, Global Marketing and Public Affairs
Sharelynn Moore has more than 20 years of experience in the energy and technology sectors. In 2013, she was named vice president of Global Marketing and Public Affairs. In this role, Moore is responsible for all global marketing and public affairs activities for Itron, including development of strategic marketing objectives, oversight of internal and external communications and management of external affairs including community investment and government relations.

Previously, Moore served as vice president of Corporate Communications after holding a variety of product- and marketing-related roles during her more than 12 years at Itron. In previous assignments, Moore focused on the strategy, management and marketing of Itron's Automated Meter Reading (AMR) solutions, network technologies, and enterprise meter data management software.

Prior to joining Itron, Moore held marketing and product management roles at Avista Corporation and Micron. She holds a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Idaho and an MBA with an emphasis in IT from Gonzaga University.

Barbara Doyle

Vice President, Investor Relations
Barbara Doyle was named Itron's vice president of Investor Relations in September 2011. Prior to joining Itron, Doyle was vice president of investor relations at Lawson Software, Inc., a $750 million revenue global provider of enterprise software solutions based in St. Paul, Minn. Doyle began her career at IBM Corporation where she held positions of increasing responsibility in budgeting and planning, business development and controllership before moving into the investor relations group in Armonk, N.Y. in 2000. Doyle holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Pennsylvania State University and an MBA from Duke University.

Operational Leadership

Carl Porter

President, Gas
Carl Porter was named president of Itron's Gas business line in November 2015. Since 2001, Porter has served as vice president of sales, marketing and delivery for Gas in North America. Porter has dedicated his career to developing innovative solutions to address utility challenges and ensure the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas.

Porter has more than 40 years of experience in the gas industry, working for 30 years at North American utility companies and serving as the president and CEO of a public utility prior to joining Itron.

Gavin van Tonder

President, Water
Gavin van Tonder was named president of Itron's water business line in 2013. Originally from South Africa, van Tonder started his career as a process chemical engineer working for Sasol Oil Company. In 1989, he joined Schlumberger Oilfield Services in South Africa and has worked and lived in Italy, Scotland, Singapore, Vietnam, India, China, UK, Australia and Malaysia in the oil, gas, electricity and water industries. Since 2010, van Tonder has worked as Itron's vice president of global marketing and systems for water and heat. Gavin has more than 12 years of global experience in the water industry and has worked with a wide variety of oil companies and water utilities, providing solutions, systems and products to enhance their efficiency.

Mark de Vere White

President, Electricity
Mark de Vere White was named president of Itron's electricity business line in 2013. Most recently senior vice president, energy, North America, de Vere White was responsible for sales, product marketing, professional services, regulatory relations and customer operations. De Vere White has dedicated his career to working with utility and Fortune 1000 customers, focusing on sales, marketing, delivery and ongoing support of business critical operations and integrated enterprise solutions. He has led his teams with an unyielding drive to deliver customer value and success at all levels.

Prior to joining Itron, de Vere White was in charge of consulting, support, hosting and account management at Silicon Energy. Before Silicon Energy, de Vere White was one of the first employees at market-leading CRM software provider Kana, where he held executive positions overseeing account management, consulting and support teams. De Vere White started his career in marketing, consulting and direct marketing in New York City.

De Vere White received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating Summa Cum Laude/Phi Beta Kappa.

Simon Pontin

Chief Technology Officer
Simon Pontin was named Chief Technology Officer in January 2011. Pontin joined Itron (then Schlumberger Electricity) in 1989 after graduating from Aston University in England with a degree in electromechanical engineering. He showed natural leadership in his first role, participating in the design of various solid-state metering developments in the United Kingdom. In 2006, he took the helm in developing Itron's smart grid solution, OpenWay®. Today, as CTO of Itron, Pontin is uniquely equipped to ensure that Itron's technology helps utilities solve some of their most pressing challenges.

Rich Christensen

Senior Vice President, Global Research and Development
Rich Christensen was named senior vice president of global research and development in 2013. He is responsible for developing and supporting products and solutions for each of Itron's business segments and regions. Christensen's product responsibilities include gas, electricity and water meters; communications modules; handheld, mobile and fixed data collection products; as well as meter data collection, meter data management, and analytic solutions. Christensen was most recently vice president of global research and development for the energy segment and has been responsible for research and development for numerous product lines since joining Itron in 1995.

Prior to Itron, Christensen was a senior engineer and project lead for Motorola's Government Electronics Group in Scottsdale, Arizona. In this role, he developed and supported various radio products for both military and commercial customers.

Christensen received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he focused on electromagnetic waves and antenna design. His post graduate work at Arizona State University was focused on antenna and radio frequency circuit design.

Christophe Fontaine

Senior Vice President, Global Operations
Christophe Fontaine was named senior vice president, global operations, in 2013. Fontaine is responsible for Itron's global operations, which includes manufacturing, procurement and quality. Fontaine brings a dedication to quality and efficiency and is working to streamline Itron's electricity, gas and water manufacturing processes across all regions. Prior to this new appointment, Fontaine served as vice president operations, energy since 2011, when he first joined Itron.

Fontaine has over 20 years experience in the automotive industry working for international companies, most recently for Valeo as Interior Controls Branch Industrial Director. Fontaine has deep expertise in Lean Manufacturing, procurement and quality.

Fontaine graduated from the Tarbes National Engineering School (Ecole Nationale d’Ingénieur de Tarbes) with a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Bruce Douglas

Senior Vice President, General Manager of Software and Services
Bruce Douglas was named senior vice president and general manager of Software and Services in January 2015. Douglas is responsible for architecting Itron's software and services strategy, and for integrating this important aspect of our business into Itron’s existing electricity, gas and water solutions. He works closely with the Electricity, Gas and Water businesses to integrate new Software and Service offerings as value-added components of the Itron solution portfolio. Under his guidance, Itron is broadening its technology portfolio with value-added software and services, and deliver true business outcomes to our utility customers around the globe.

Douglas brings with him over two decades of insight at both global, multi-national corporations and smaller start-ups. His entrepreneurial mindset and international, strategic and customer-centric experience has helped him build and grow software- and services-related businesses at CIBER Inc., Oracle, Sun Microsystems and Neogent Inc., among others.

Russell E. Vanos

Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Global Software, Services and Smart Cities
Russell E. Vanos was named vice president of sales and marketing for global software, services and smart cities in November 2015. In this role, Vanos is leading Itron's global software and services teams to enable true solution selling in collaboration with Itron's Electricity, Gas and Water business lines. He is also integral to the Internet of Things and smart cities initiatives for the company.

Vanos joined Itron in 1980 and has held various positions in sales, marketing and operations. Most recently, Vanos served as Itron's senior vice president of business development. Previously, Vanos served as Itron's vice president of marketing until 2011 and vice president and general manager, sales and marketing for energy until 2010.

Vanos is on the board of the Washington State University Energy Innovation Center and Envision Charlotte, is a member of Edison Electric Institute (EEI), sits on the Cisco Internet of Things Steering Committee, and is a founding member of the Smart Cities Council.
