Itron Awarded Three-Year Metering Contract Extension by Northeast Utilities

Long Standing Relationship Leads Utility to Choose Itron's Metering Products for its Overall AMR Deployment

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — January 22, 2009 — Itron Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) announced today that it has been awarded a three-year metering contract extension by New England's largest utility system. Northeast Utilities System (NU) granted Itron the extension after an extensive evaluation of competitive bids. The contract provides metering and communication technology for NU's subsidiary, Connecticut Light and Power (CL&P), as part of its automated meter reading (AMR) strategy.

Continuing to deploy Itron's advanced solutions enables CL&P to further meet its goals of satisfying its customers' needs with the most efficient, cost-effective and flexible technology in the marketplace.

NU first began piloting Itron AMR technology in the mid-90s and was immediately able to realize benefits associated with increased reliability, optimized productivity and decreased costs. Collaborating with Itron has allowed them to implement several leading-edge technologies including developing a polyphase metering and communication solution that utilizes CENTRON® meters and fits their criteria for functionality and cost. For commercial and industrial customers who require more extensive or frequent data, Itron helped the utility to deploy both wired and wireless digital modems utilizing Itron's SENTINEL® meters.
