A business problem as pervasive as energy measurement requires a complex and far-reaching solution built from several components including comprehensive smart meters, an enhanced and secure communications network and sophisticated system software. OpenWay distinguishes itself from all other smart metering offerings in the marketplace by providing all these attributes and more. It’s been designed to meet the business and operational needs for meter data collection while supporting additional applications such as distribution automation and empowering customers to actively and frequently participate in demand response and energy conservation efforts.
Complex energy measurement also requires thorough knowledge and experience in the utility and smart grid markets. It requires open-minded collaboration with industry leaders to help shape the technologies available today—and those to be developed tomorrow—to help make the smart grid a reality. Over the last 30 years, Itron has been committed to working with the best and the brightest to bring leading-edge technologies to market—we’ll be here for the next 30 as well.

Benefits
Operational
Smart metering lowers the cost per read. Having frequent meter readings and on-demand readings can eliminate the need for field service calls and reduce insurance, repair and maintenance costs. This level of data can also speed up resolution of customer service telephone calls.
Energy Conservation
Smart metering technology provides the infrastructure for demand response and direct load control, two energy management strategies that lower price. It also increases reliability, and has a small impact on overall energy consumption. AMI provides the time-differentiated meter readings needed to support time-based rates, which can lower energy consumption by 4 percent. Giving consumers access to detailed daily consumption information has been shown to reduce energy consumption 3 to 11 percent.
Smart Grid Support
Smart metering provides frequent data about who uses how much of what commodity, where they use it and when they use it. Without this level of information, it’s difficult for the transmission and distribution system to be smart about self-optimizing and self-healing.
