Improve Resource Management & Conservation

Challenge

Population growth, climate change and soaring consumerism are all putting pressure on one of the earth’s most valuable resources: water. Utilities must responsibly manage natural resources in ways that guarantee their commitment to deliver reliable service to customers. Water loss through leakage is a chief challenge to many water utilities with aging infrastructure. In many service areas, water conservation programs are imperative in meeting the water needs of their communities during peak usage periods. But how do utilities manage effective conservation programs without the ability to analyze usage data and track results?

Electric utilities face similar challenges. Electricity generation and distribution is extremely costly. Without the ability to store electricity, utilities that face local transmission constraints must manage distribution by encouraging conservation and responsible usage to avoid skyrocketing energy costs, outages and dissatisfied customers.

Solution

There is no better way to gather the amount of data necessary for responsibly managing energy and water than by automating meter data collection. When daily and interval meter reads are combined with Itron’s innovative software solutions, utilities can analyze usage, identify and manage peak load, forecast usage more accurately, and design programs based on detailed customer profiling and data logging that encourage responsible energy and water consumption. Itron’s Fixed Network collection systems also provide tamper and leak detection at the water meter for managing loss due to theft and leakage. Itron’s analysts and consultants have extensive experience in evaluating energy efficiency programs for utilities and government energy agencies and have a long and outstanding record of assisting clients in the design and implementation of energy efficiency programs.
